Patna University, Bihar

Established in September 1917 by an Act of the Royal Law Council, Patna University is one of the oldest universities in modern India. It officially commenced its academic journey in October 1917, with JG Jennings serving as its first Vice-Chancellor.

Initially, the university had jurisdiction over all higher education institutions in Bihar, Odisha, and even the Kingdom of Nepal. It conducted examinations from school finals to postgraduate levels for nearly four decades. However, this changed with the establishment of Tribhuvan University (Kathmandu) and Utkal University (Bhubaneswar).

On January 2, 1952, Patna University was transformed into an academic university, restricting its jurisdiction to the capital city of Patna. The university is known for its historical significance, with many of its buildings located along the Ganges River and Saidpur Campus. The Wheeler Senate House, a notable landmark of the university, was built in 1926, funded by Raja Devaki Nandan Prasad of Munger.
