The Express Entry system is one of the most efficient immigration pathways for skilled workers looking to settle in Canada. Originally introduced by New Zealand in 2005 and later adopted by Australia in 2012, the success of this system led Canada to launch Express Entry in 2015. Managed by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), this system invites skilled professionals from around the world to contribute to the country’s economy and workforce.
What is Express Entry in Canada?
Many individuals from various countries apply for Canadian immigration to seek better employment opportunities. Previously, applications for permanent residency (PR) were processed on a first-come, first-served basis, which often led to a mismatch in the skill sets of incoming workers.
To streamline the process and ensure the selection of the right candidates, Canada introduced the Express Entry system. Under this program, PR is granted based on the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score. The Canada Express Entry Draws, conducted every two weeks, select applicants with the highest CRS scores, inviting them to apply for PR.
Key Features of Express Entry Canada
1. Managed by IRCC
The Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is the official body that handles Express Entry applications and oversees the selection process for granting PR status to foreign workers.
2. Selection Based on CRS Score
The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) evaluates applicants based on several key factors, including:
- Language Proficiency: English/French language test scores
- Age: Younger applicants score higher
- Education: Higher qualifications increase CRS points
- Work Experience: Skilled work experience boosts CRS ranking
- Adaptability: Extra points for a spouse’s qualifications or previous Canadian experience
Applicants are ranked according to their CRS score, and only the highest-ranking candidates receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for PR.
3. Faster Processing & Cost-Effective
Before the Express Entry system, PR applications could take 5-6 years for approval. Now, under Express Entry, the processing time is just 6 months.
- Profile Validity: Once submitted, an Express Entry profile remains active for one year. If an applicant does not receive an ITA, they can reapply in the following year.
- Application Fees: While creating an Express Entry profile is free, applicants may need to cover costs for:
- Educational Credential Assessment (ECA)
- English/French language proficiency tests (IELTS, CELPIP, TEF, TCF)
- Document translation and other verification fees
4. High Employment Prospects
While obtaining PR does not guarantee a job, Express Entry candidates have a high employment rate. Many PR holders secure jobs in their respective fields based on their skills and work experience.
5. Dependent Family Members Can Accompany You
Express Entry allows applicants to bring their spouse, common-law partner, and dependent children to Canada under their PR application. This provides families with the opportunity to settle together.
