Banaras Hindu University (BHU) was co-founded by Madan Mohan Malaviya, Annie Besant, Maharaja Rameshwar Singh, and the Maharaja of Banaras.
At the 21st Congress of the Indian National Congress in Banaras (December 1905), Malaviya publicly announced his vision to establish a university in Kashi (Varanasi). He continued refining this vision with inputs from Indian nationalists and scholars, publishing his educational program in 1911.
His focus was on alleviating poverty in India by integrating science and technology into education, alongside research in Indian religion and culture. He strongly believed:
