Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU), Rohtak, was initially established as Rohtak University under Act No. 25 of 1975 by the Haryana State Legislature and officially came into existence in 1976. The university was renamed in 1977 after the great thinker and social reformer Maharshi Dayanand.

Originally founded to promote higher education and research in ecology, environmental science, and health sciences, MDU evolved into a collaborative university in November 1978.
