History & Evolution of Ranchi University

Before the establishment of Ranchi University, all degree colleges in present-day Jharkhand (excluding Santhal Parganas) were affiliated with Patna University. Ranchi University was founded as a teaching and research institution on July 12, 1960, bringing all degree colleges in Jharkhand under its jurisdiction.

Bishnudeo Narayan Singh was appointed as the university’s first Vice-Chancellor. Over time, Ranchi University was bifurcated to form new universities:

• Vinoba Bhave University (1992) – reducing Ranchi University’s jurisdiction by almost half.
• Nilamber Pitamber University (January 2009) – further restructuring.
• Kolhan University (August 2009) – adding to the decentralization of higher education in the state.

Academic Programs & Admissions

Ranchi University offers undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) courses in various disciplines, including medicine, engineering, liberal arts, commerce, law, and science.
