University of Calcutta

The University of Calcutta (often referred to as Calcutta University or CU) is a prestigious public research university located in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. Established on January 24, 1857, it was the first modern university in South Asia. Currently, the university’s jurisdiction is limited to specific districts of West Bengal.

Recognized as a “Five-Star University”, CU has been awarded an “A” grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). Additionally, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has designated it as a “Centre with Potential for Excellence in a Particular Area” and a “University with Potential for Excellence.”

In 2020, the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), under the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, ranked CU seventh among Indian universities.
