About University of Kerala

The University of Kerala, formerly known as the University of Travancore, was established in 1937 in the princely state of Travancore (now part of southern Kerala and neighboring Tamil Nadu). It is one of India’s first 16 universities and has undergone significant transformation over the past seven decades.

The University’s origins can be traced back to two historic institutions in Kerala:

  • University College, Thiruvananthapuram (originally founded as Maharaja’s Free School by Maharaja Swathi Thirunal in 1834).
