The West Bengal Government established a committee of experts on December 31, 1998, under the chairmanship of Ashesh Prasad Mitra, to assess the need and feasibility of setting up an Engineering and Technology University in the state.
The university officially commenced operations on January 15, 2001, following the enactment of the WEST BENGAL UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY ACT, 2001 (West Bengal Act XV of 2000). It began its academic programs on July 16, 2001, after the Department of Higher Education, Government of West Bengal, issued a notice on June 15, 2001, regarding the merger of Engineering and Management Institutions/Colleges.
WBUT is recognized under UGC Category 2F and Category 12B and is a recipient of UGC grants. The university follows an inclusive approach, ensuring equal opportunities without discrimination based on gender, class, belief, or religion. WBUT also focuses on technological advancements with a broad social perspective and introduces new courses in emerging fields to promote research, development, and higher education.
